New York State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. has created a fresh gambling addiction organization in New York State, the Problem Gambling Advisory Council. This council will offer guidance to the Governor’s office and the state legislature on issues related to problematic gambling. They will also suggest ways to enhance the accessibility of prevention and treatment programs.
Addabbo has been a significant figure in the drive for gambling legislation within New York State. He introduced the state’s online gambling bill and played a crucial role in the legislation for retail sports betting. He was also instrumental in pushing for the legalization of online sports betting in the state.
The agency’s 13 members will include the head of the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), the leader of the Gaming Commission, and 11 other individuals.
“As a co-supporter of this legislation and head of the Senate Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee, I am pleased that we are fulfilling our promise to provide more resources and increase public understanding about problem gambling in our state,” Addabbo stated.
Making mobile sports wagering legal has brought our state more educational funding and income than we anticipated. The recently authorized licenses for casinos in the southern part of the state will generate employment and bring in additional funds. However, this new legislation demonstrates that we haven’t overlooked the issue of problematic gambling. We must address it promptly and with seriousness.
This news follows a survey conducted by the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) which found that 5% of adults in the state struggle with gambling. Furthermore, 10% of students in grades 7 through 12 exhibit signs of problematic gambling.
State legislators have recently approved plans to construct three new casinos in areas south of the state, including New York City.
