Chapter Twenty-One: Brazil’s Future Path
But before this South American expedition, our hosts discuss the advancements made in Florida since the release of Chapter Twenty.
In the recent weeks, West Flagler has submitted a request for reconsideration. The court didn’t reject the request, but instead asked the Seminoles to respond by August 31st.
With so much bureaucracy, it’s believed that sports wagering in Florida won’t be happening anytime soon. However, the possibility of a launch during the upcoming NFL season isn’t entirely out of the question.
What’s in store for Brazil?
Meanwhile, in Brazil, Neil Montgomery states “anything is possible.”
The nation regulated sports wagering in July after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a temporary measure.
This officially implemented the sports betting rules approved by Law 13,756 of 2018. But Montgomery says these rules contain some “surprises,” including a higher GGR tax, stricter marketing limitations, and higher licensing fees.
These rules represent a conclusion, but not everyone is pleased with the result. Now, individuals are hoping for modifications in the Brazilian National Congress, where it must be approved to become permanent law.
“Despite some progress, we still encounter strong opposition from specific groups in society, specific groups in Congress,” Montgomery stated.
“Much is happening in Brazil, but we must observe what actually transpires.”
Montgomery mentioned that despite the political tension surrounding sports betting in Brazil, advancement is being made in implementing the rules.
“In harmony with the discussion of federal law, particular states and cities have taken the initiative in this process and launched their own products locally.”
For Hugo Baumgartner – the initial returning guest on the World Politics series – the regulation of sports betting is a significant step forward for the nation.
“From my perspective… I believe this is a substantial step forward for Brazil,” he said, “The temporary measure is a very, very positive development. It’s the initial step.”
