Gaming employees in Atlantic City are protesting a provision that permits smoking inside casinos. They voiced their concerns at a prominent industry gathering, demonstrating against the existing rules.
These staff members are outraged that the New Jersey Casino Association withdrew from a panel discussion concerning indoor smoking at the recent East Coast Gaming Congress. They are urging legislators to intervene and finally approve legislation to make casinos smoke-free environments.
“It’s simple for casino executives to disregard the issue from their smoke-free workspaces,” stated Pete Naccarelli, a Borgata dealer and co-head of CEASE, an organization advocating for smoke-free casinos. “Enough postponements; it’s time to enact the legislation.”
Lamont White, a fellow Borgata dealer and CEASE co-head, remarked, “They must cease sheltering behind the casino sector and prioritize our well-being. We all understand these measures will pass with substantial backing when they ultimately reach a vote.”
Bills (A2151 and S264) are prepared that would eliminate the provision and prohibit smoking in casinos. They possess bipartisan approval, but for unknown reasons, legislators are delaying and haven’t even introduced them for a vote.
Cynthia Hallett, head of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, discussed the pressing nature of the matter: “Each day of postponement signifies more casino staff are subjected to secondhand smoke, jeopardizing their health. We have the backing; it’s time for the legislature to take action.”
