Protecting Young Minds: The Decline of Wagering Ads on UK Television

A recent study by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) reveals an encouraging pattern: young people are encountering significantly fewer wagering promotions on television. From 2010 to 2023, their contact with these advertisements drastically declined by 40%! This is a component of a broader endeavor by the ASA to safeguard children from unsuitable marketing, and they have been diligently monitoring promotions for products such as betting, spirits, and unhealthy food.

The decrease in wagering advertisements is reflected in comparable reductions in alcohol (down by a substantial 80%!) and non-nutritious food advertisements. Naturally, youngsters are viewing less television overall these days, but the ASA is not becoming complacent. They are shifting their attention to the digital realm, where children devote a significant portion of their time, with programs like the “Exposure Report” and “100 Children Report” to ensure that young people are shielded there as well.

The United Kingdom’s advertising regulatory body, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), recently affirmed a decision against Festival Free Bets. The company utilized social media personality Astrid Wett in a promotional effort that violated established guidelines. Gambling advertisements in the UK are subject to stringent regulations regarding the involvement of young celebrities, and Astrid did not meet the age requirement at the time of the campaign.
